Cavities

Now, I am no dentist, but I do know that cavities are bad. Avoiding them is a two-step process for kids. The first is avoiding and limiting sticky sugary things such as candies, juices, etc. Kids are lucky in that they have a lot of healthy saliva to help get rid of stuck-on foods in their teeth, but if enough sugar sticks on the teeth for a long time, boom! We get cavities. A secret culprit of this sugar on teeth is milk, especially the nighttime milk before bed without brushing or taking a good couple of gulps of water to swish around before bedtime. The next way to help avoid these cavities is having kiddos drink water throughout the day and brushing their teeth regularly with a kid’s toothpaste to clear away any stuck-on sugar between the teeth. Lucky for us that in the modern age with city water having safe low levels of fluoride as well as a plethora of kid-friendly toothpaste, dental cavity rates have declined over the years. But if a kiddo is complaining of tooth sensitivity or pain, it should get checked out ASAP by your family dentist as there are newer treatments now to help kids avoid fillings such as silver treatment to prevent cavity growth.
